Characters in Evelyn Waugh novels are always “getting tight”  (so much more refined than the latter day “rat arsed” or “falling down drunk without pants on”).  Here is Sebastian getting drunk in his room, and then facing his mother.  Oh dear.  No wonder he ran away to Morocco.
