to bake or not to bake

nighthawks:

A little known fact about me: I can’t bake. I really want to be able to, and when I go to dinner parties or school functions and see the wonderful edibles people have made, I get rather jealous. Even though everything I bake comes out with either a crispy, black crust or simply implodes onto itself, I always keep trying. I think I am going to attempt to make peanut butter blondies today. Relatively simple, right? I guess we will see.

Here is the recipe I plan to follow, if anyone else is interested:

Oven Temp.: 350°
Approx. Bake Time: 20-22 minutes
Yields: 9×5 inch loaf pan (8 bars)

Ingredients
3 tbsp. butter
1/4 c. peanut butter
1/2 c. sugar
2 tbsp. brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. peanut butter or chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions
- Cream the butter, peanut butter, sugar, and brown sugar. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt, just until blended. Stir in the chips.
- Spread the batter into a loaf pan and bake in a preheated oven until the edges just begin to pull away from the sides of the pan. Allow to cool before cutting into bars.

I used to say the same thing, only with me it was “I can’t cook”.  But I think, like anything, with practise you improve.  I got Jamie Oliver’s cook book - he has some really simple recipes which always turn out for me.  Including some cakes.

yeah, and an oven thermometer! Plus, if something looks like it’s maybe kinda not fully done, realize it will continue...
